International Gelshield 200 Epoxy Primer – High-Performance Osmosis Protection

International Gelshield 200 Epoxy Primer is a quick-drying, two-component epoxy primer designed to protect GRP (glass-reinforced plastic) hulls against osmosis. Engineered for ease of use, it allows multiple coats to be applied in a single day, even in temperatures as low as 5°C. Its fast-drying properties, combined with superior protection, make it an essential choice for boat owners looking to prevent costly osmosis damage.

Why Choose Gelshield 200?

  • Comprehensive Osmosis Protection: Creates a durable, water-resistant barrier in just five coats, preventing and treating osmosis damage on GRP hulls.
  • Quick Drying: Enables the application of multiple coats in a single day, saving time and effort.
  • Low-Temperature Application: Can be applied in conditions as low as 5°C, extending your maintenance window.
  • User-Friendly: Easy to apply with a brush or roller, offering a professional finish with minimal effort.

Key Features

  • Osmosis Protection: Provides long-term defense with a five-coat system (minimum 250 microns DFT).
  • Fast Drying: Touch dry in as little as 1 hour (25°C).
  • Low-Temperature Performance: Usable at temperatures down to 5°C.
  • Durable and Reliable: Ensures a robust protective layer for GRP surfaces.
  • Practical Coverage: Covers approximately 8.1 m² per litre (practical).

Technical Specifications

  • Colour Options: Grey (YPA213) and Green (YPA212) for alternating coats to ensure full coverage.
  • Finish: Matt.
  • Volume Solids: 45%.
  • Coverage: 8.1 m²/L (practical) per coat.
  • Dry Film Thickness (DFT): 50 microns per coat.
  • Wet Film Thickness (WFT): 111 microns per coat.
  • Mix Ratio: 3:1 by volume.
  • Pack Sizes: 750ml, 2.5L.

Application Areas

  • GRP Gelcoats: Ideal for preventing osmosis below the waterline.
  • Bilges: Apply two coats if a gelcoat is present; use Gelshield Plus if the gelcoat is absent.
  • Previously Antifouled Surfaces: Requires preparation before application for optimal results.

Application and Preparation

  1. Surface Preparation:

    • GRP Gelcoat: Degrease with a suitable cleaner, sand with 180–220 grit paper, and clean thoroughly.
    • Exposed Laminate: Patch prime with Gelshield Plus.
    • Previously Antifouled Surfaces: Remove old antifouling with Interstrip, clean with Super Cleaner, and sand with 180-grit paper.
  2. Mixing and Application:

    • Mix curing agent with the base at a 3:1 ratio by volume. Allow 10 minutes for air bubbles to disperse.
    • Alternate grey and green coats for full coverage, starting and ending with grey.
    • Apply using a brush or roller in a minimum of five coats to achieve the required 250 microns DFT.
  3. Drying and Overcoating (at 25°C):

    • Touch Dry: 60 minutes.
    • Overcoat Interval: Minimum 3 hours, up to 6 months.
